Chris has been misquoted as lashing Bono and supporting Steve Hofmyer - here are his true words:
although i've just sent out a blog, i feel the heat of the past few days warrants another commentary. of course i'm speaking about the whole bono/ malema kill the boer fracas. i was preparing for my afternoon show on sunday when i got wind of the statement attributed to bono by the sunday times. something about the information felt out of place and i wasn't comfortable with it. what i was, is and always will be sure of that the struggle song which contains the words' kill the boer' belong in the archives of our countries dark past every bit as much as apartheid ,the south african war, the difakane and many others. i harbour for this song something very much resembling hate and have always made my position clear on that. I subsequently posted comments on my twitter and facebook expressing a) my aversion to this song, b) my reservations about the authenticity of the news and c) my impressions of how to deal with these issues in a civilised society. the two comments where the following:
#1: aggenee man bono? say it ain't so! i've never thought of you as a politically insensitive prick... i hope this is just a rumour. no man... really
#2: if hate speech is part of your culture, your culture needs to change. racism was part of my culture and i've elected to change that.
i can control my own utterances, but will not and also have no interest in controlling the responses on my facebook page beyond deleting expletives and/ or inflammatory language. however it became clear in some comments that the disclaimer and reservations of the authenticity of the breaking news where overlooked by some for reasons known only unto them. after all that has transpired i would commit to the same comments now as i did then. as you can see from these posts there where no jumping to conclusions or hasty judgements and as a consequence, contrary to some opinions, no egg on my face or reason for backtracking. that said, i also feel that anyone who is taken that article as a fact need suffer no embarrassment whatsoever as they where the victims of misinformation from what is expected to be a reliable source. this is after all the source we get our election results and lottery numbers from? i was thoroughly dismayed to read the star tonight quoting me as saying the following:
"Singer Chris Chameleon tweeted that it was the first time Bono chose against the side of the oppressed"
i cannot for the life of me understand how that quote can be deduced from the aforementioned. however, what this does reveal, is that i, bono, malema, zille and piet pompies are all subject to the whims and agendas of the news media. i've known this for most of my 20 years in the public eye, which is why i always act bearing that in mind, which is why my comments on breaking news are always conditional as in this case.
more important than my frustrations and hurt feelings, is the fact that there currently is a battle being waged at the highest levels of both the south african government and the south african news media about placing restrictions on the medias reporting. i am a true supporter of free press and a firm believer that no democracy can function properly when its media cannot report all things freely and fairly. i am also by nature suspicious of any government in the world restraining the press. but the events of the last few days at my personal, very small part in them, shakes my belief system. it is very challenging to align myself with the press' cause for it's own freedom when it has abused that mandate in my own situation. how do i know that malema, zuma, zille, mugabe and/ or the pope where not equally misrepresented?
a quick glance of the cast in this travesty we call world and national politics is all the convincing any sane man would need to realise that the press should be free from all things but responsibility and that every abuse of the grace granted them by the principles of a free and fair democracy undermines not only their mandate but also the very pillars of the democracy that has granted them this grace. I am disgusted, concerned and also angry and i thank god for twitter and facebook for their service to the oldest most effective and still most trustworthy broadcaster of all time- the bush telegraph, which is the voice of the people.
This communication by Chris Chameleon was made available on FB earlier today.
